{Sameer & Shannon} Balboa Park Wedding

Here is the second part of the lovely two day celebration for Sameer and Shannon.

The wedding was at the Museum of Art in Balboa Park and it was perfectly beautiful.

Here are a few photos from this beautiful and fun day!!

Loved the purple!

Clearly gorgousness runs in the family! :-)

Beauty

Beauty is such a strange thing.

There is SO much importance and status placed on it. Yet we all try to act like we don’t care about it all that much. We try and act like it doesn’t define us. But let’s be real… it does, to some extent it does.

I’ve had days where I woke up feeling skinny (I know, ridiculous) and I got dressed wearing something I will only wear when I’m a few pounds lower than normal… then I step on the scale and I’m actually UP a pound. Right in that moment the sinking feeling comes over me and all of the ugly starts oozing out.

I’m fat.

I’m not pretty.

I’m a slob.

I can’t wear this outfit.

My nose just grew 6 inches.

I’m getting wrinkles.

I look older than I am.

blah.

blah.

and so forth…

The fact is… it’s not true. None of that is true. But it’s dictated by these strange standards we’ve given ourselves. Would a stranger on the street honestly know if we were a week past getting our hair done? If we were 2 or even 7lbs heavier than normal… if we were 2 or even 7lbs LESS? Would they think anything different if they met us? Most likely… no. They would just see US at that moment. So why are we SO blinded that we can’t do the same? Why this insane pressure? Why the stress we put onto our poor bodies. You know, those ones that we need to take care of? Goodness… my obsession with my looks literally does me no good.

So how do we fix it?

We stop believing the lies we tell ourselves daily and we listen to the people around us (who are kind, of course… cause there will always be stinkers out there)…

when your little child looks up at you and says you are beautiful you know what? It’s because you are.

When your husband married you, I’m preeeeeetty sure he thought you were beautiful.

When your mama looked at you for the first time… I would go out on a limb and say that she was overwhelmed with love for the beautiful, tiny pink person that she held in her arms.

I have so so so many clients that tell me that they “aren’t photogenic” or that they hate pictures of themselves. They hate their laugh. They hate their profile. It makes me feel restricted to a point when someone tells me those things… but you know what… I’m going to make you laugh anyway. You know why? Because I’m stinking hilarious. Also because you are GORGEOUS when you laugh. Your profile is beautiful. In fact, I think everything about you is beautiful… especially the love you and your fiance share together. It’s all so beautiful.

I’m sure most of you have seen this video circulating around Facebook.

If you haven’t watched it… please watch it. Be encouraged. Know that you are beautiful. Unique. Special. Lovely. Fun. Amazing. Worth everything.

And because every post is better with a picture, here is one of my little beauty.

You are beautiful and it’s okay to know that. :-)

Kim McKinney - April 16, 2013 - 11:34 pm

Brooke, you bless me and others in so many ways. You are beautiful!

Elise - April 17, 2013 - 8:39 am

You bless me, too. And made me cry, in a good way <3

PalomaLisa - April 17, 2013 - 1:32 pm

Yes. Amen. Agreed.
Love that you are an encourager of beauty. The real kind.

{Sameer & Shannon} San Diego Wedding

I simply have too many wonderful things to say about Sameer and Shannon so I’ll just share a few of the basics. They are truly kind, thoughtful, humble and wonderful individuals. We were more than blessed to work with them.

We had been looking forward to their wedding immensely. One of the reasons is because they were having a traditional Indian ceremony/celebration the day before their contemporary wedding. Sean and I had never photographed an Indian wedding before so we were so excited and looking forward to the challenge.

I’m breaking their wedding up into two blog posts because it was that wonderful! Plus I feel like the indian ceremony deserved its own post. :-)

The colors at the ceremony were breathtaking. There were so many beautiful details and it was amazing to witness another culture’s traditions.

{Jed & Whitney) Green Gables Estate Wedding

Jed and Whitney’s beautiful classically vintage wedding took place at one of my absolute favorite venues Green Gables Estate. It is such a hidden gem in North County.

On the wedding day North County decided to be rainy and even showed us some hail… everyone was prepared to move all of the events inside (thankfully Green Gables has a gorgeous tent on the property) but the sun came out and the rain stopped in the knick of time and everything looked fresh and even more beautiful! They say that rain on your wedding day is lucky, and I have no doubt that Jed and Whitney were covered in it. :-)

Sean and I couldn’t have loved working with this amazing couple more. From the moment we met, we knew that we simply adored them! They are seriously the most thoughtful, considerate, kind and humble people. We truly feel as if we’ve made lovely friends in Jed and Whitney and we couldn’t be more thrilled and happy for them and all the the new adventures they will experience as a Mr. & Mrs.

Thank you both for having us document your day! We loved every moment of it!

Brooke Aliceon Photography Workshop 2013

Our first workshop was probably my favorite thing since having our business. It was rewarding. It was terrifying. It was freeing. It was humbling. It was nerve-wracking. It was encouraging.

I had been asked about teaching workshops before and I always shrugged it off  because I hadn’t even done one before. I wondered who would ever want to take one from me. But finally I thought, it can’t hurt… I’ll just offer one and if enough people sign up it’ll happen and if not, no big deal, I’ll try again next year. Well, I was HUMBLED at how many people showed interest. I literally couldn’t have felt more blessed and honored. Truly and from the bottom of my soul… so honored that other people found my work special enough to want to learn from me. I just couldn’t believe it!

The night before the workshop I was up late… of course. I had butterflies in my stomach and I was driving myself crazy. Did I remember everything? What if I say something stupid? What if there is too much time and not enough to talk about? What if they all know what I have to say? The terror and the nerves started settling in… I knew I had a handful of photographers that were currently running successful businesses, a few that were just starting out and a few that just wanted to understand their DSLR camera. I had a plan, but I was afraid that not everyone would get enough out of this because there were so many different levels.  I was literally thinking of everything that could possibly go wrong…

The morning of the workshop came quick. We left the house around 5:30am and began the trek out to (freezing) Ramona to begin set up. The butterflies had finally started to mellow out as we all worked to make sure everything was set up beautifully for the attendees. The time FLEW by and soon it was 9am… time to start.

I looked around as I saw faces I didn’t know filter in… and then a few familiar faces as well. I was more nervous than I probably have ever been in my life and then like magic the nerves vanished. I saw all of these amazing photographers out there who were SO ready to learn, hungry for information and creativity. I was inspired by them! I wanted to tell them EVERYTHING I knew… save them from any mistake I made and encourage them to do want they want to do. Every single person was amazing. The group was encouraging to each other, friendly, loving and kind. I felt like we had all been friends… like I somehow knew them all from before. It was so amazing.

I had arranged to have two models so that there was an option to go slower and learn more about camera settings and shooting manual and the other option to go faster and get right into posing/shooting and working with clients. My husband took the beginners and I took the seasoned photographers and we began to photograph our stunning models and the INCREDIBLE details that were styled by the amazing girls of Linen, Lace & Love.

I have to brag about my husband… he had EVERYONE shooting manual. Some people didn’t know how to use their camera at all and they left knowing how to work it manually… amazing!

And the images that everyone captured… amazing. I seriously couldn’t have been more blown away and proud and again HUMBLED. Humbled that these incredibly talented and inspiring people came to learn from me. I still can’t contain the joy.

Thank you all for making this workshop one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. You are all SO amazing. You are all capable of growing your businesses and going to the next levels and I cannot wait to see what is in store for each and every one of you. I know you will all do so many wonderful things! Thank you for making my world just a little bit more lovely!

A HUGE thank you goes out to my husband who is amazing in every way. Thank you to Elise and my mom who are the reason we all had food… and of course thank you to our INCREDIBLE vendors who gave us such beauty to photograph… especially Jen and Jess who worked their tails off in the freezing cold! I’m so blessed.

We also were lucky enough to have this shoot featured on Green Wedding Shoes! You can see that here!
